Dreaming Place: An Irish Adventure with Claire Coté is the first book by Devon’s, Anna Keleher, known for her whimsical illustrations, collages and probing, experimental participatory projects. Her new book out on Kindle is a travel book, with a twist. It all started five years ago…

In 2011 Anna Keleher, who lives in Compton on the rim of English Riviera Geopark and her New Mexican collaborator, Claire Coté, traveled to Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark on the island of Ireland. As roving artists-in-residence of the Geopark, they camped, kayaked and dreamt their way through the unique Irish and Northern Irish homelands (with funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England). They used experimental and novel techniques to discover the memories held within the Geopark’s 300 million year old landscape of caves, mountains, loughs, and peat bogs.

Then using field recordings gathered during their stay the two artists worked together from their respective studios, separated by three thousand miles of ocean and desert, to fashion a series of six radio broadcasts for local and community stations. In 2013 with funds raised via a successful Kickstarter campaign, the pair returned to the borderlands to launch their Radio Dreaming series with a solar-powered, teardrop camping trailer in tow. Wandering, off-grid with their Radio Dreaming listening space, they invited members of the scattered population and visitors to climb aboard and listen-in to the radio series.

Back home with her husband, in an off-grid earthship, Claire gave birth to a baby girl. Since Claire was fully occupied with her new little one, Anna decided she would sit at home in Devon and write a travel book about their adventures. Using their blogs, logs, diaries, dreams, drawings and audio-recordings along with her memories, she used the dark, wet months to weave the two journeys into a book. Illustrated with original pen and ink drawings by herself and Claire, the book is now available to readers on Amazon Kindle in time for Christmas.

“Writing the book took me right back to the Geopark and the rich natural and cultural heritage that we encountered there.….It is my first book,” says Keleher. “And yes everything I describe really did happen to us!”

With a gentle humour and vivid evocations of places and people, the book describes their encounters with farmers, musicians, potholers, off-grid homesteaders and other local residents, as they wild camp and draw their way around the region. It tells how the artists then designed a mobile studio, “The Place Dreamer Pod,” and returned for their second journey, bringing the voices fiddles and bodhrans, birds, winds, rain and chinking teapots back to the places and people where they were originally found.

“We learned so much during our time as wanderers and artists. Anna has done a wonderful job capturing the essence of our adventures, in her book,” reflects Coté.

This delightful travel book about an extraordinary journey exploring the Marble Arch Caves Geopark transports readers to County Fermanagh and County Cavan, up Cuilcagh Mountain, down into caves and out on the open road with Claire and Anna. The book is out now, just in time for Christmas. Why not surprise friends and loved ones with with this joyful and fascinating read?
